For anyone who has just lost someone, or is helping a family who has.
The first hours
Nothing has to be decided in the first hour. Take time with your loved one. When you are ready, open Step 1: Right now for a gentle checklist that goes from the first hour through the first two weeks.
No. We help you organize and prepare: what to do first, which licensed providers are nearby, and what to ask. You choose a provider and sign with them directly. We never take a fee from any funeral home, crematory or cemetery.
Clear Path After was written by a nurse administrator with more than 20 years at the bedside, after watching many families face these hours without a clear next step.
Choosing care
Open Step 2: Choose care and type your city or ZIP code. You will see licensed places near you, with prices from each one's own posted price list. Call two or three before you choose.
They come from each provider's posted price list and can change. Always confirm the total price by phone before you agree to anything. The phone script in Step 2 tells you what to ask.
Every funeral home, crematory and cemetery shown has a California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau license number on record. No one pays to be listed or to appear higher, and we never take a commission.
Please tell us on the Help page and choose "A provider listing is wrong." We check and correct listings.
Most families need 5 to 10 certified copies. In Los Angeles County each one costs $26. The funeral home can usually order them for you.
Telling family and the Family Pass
Yes. The checklist, the provider finder, the death-notice message and the obituary writer are free. The optional Family Pass ($49, one time) adds a photo notice we email for you, a lasting memorial page and a paperwork kit.
It's one payment with no subscription. You see a preview before anything is sent. See a finished example.
Yes. When you make a photo notice you can choose English or Spanish for the notice.
Choose "Give them the Family Pass" under the notice step. After paying, you get a private link to send the family. They open it to set up the notice and memorial page at no cost.
Your phone and your privacy
Yes. It's the same guide with the same tools. The layout simply adjusts to your screen, and on a phone a step bar at the bottom lets you move between steps.
It opens this same guide on your phone. Nothing is different. If a hospice or organization gave you its own QR code, you'll see their name and support lines too.
Yes. On the home page, choose "Keep this guide on your phone." It opens like an app, with no app store and no account, and your checklist still opens with a weak signal at the hospital.
No account is needed. Your checklist stays on your phone. Nothing is sent until you press Send. See our Privacy page for details.
